Degrassi: U Don't Know (Part 2)

"I'm meeting my birth mom for coffee"

Degrassi truly surprised fans this week in the episode named after a Jay-Z song, with a slightly less relatable story and somewhat of a soapy cliche. Holly J Sinclair has found out that she was adopted at 11 months old. We also see Adam struggle with his body again, and more drama from Eli and Clare's break up.

Holly J tells her mother that she has found her birth mom (Dawn) and is going to contact her. She calls Dawn and introduces herself, she plans to meet her at The Dot after school. Holly J gets there and is surprised to see that she has two kids now. Dawn tells Holly J that she was in college and had to choose between being a mother and finishing school to establish her career. Holly J does not blame her for her decision. Dawn informs them that she is now a single mom who makes less money. Holly J decides not to ask her to get tested in fears of chasing her off. Later the doctor informs Holly J that Fiona was not a match and now she is now on the transplant list because her kidneys are failing. He also suggest that Holly J cancel her plans to attend Yale in the fall. A devastated Holly J contemplates not going to her dream school and accomplishing her goals. Holly J meets Dawn again and this time tells her the whole story. Dawn agrees to get herself tested and take it from there. Holly J later gets a phone call from Dawn, telling her that she is a match! Holly J is thrilled but quickly changes her mood when Dawn request $20,000 in exchange for her kidney.

Adam tells his mother that he wants to undergo breast reconstruction. She does not want him going through surgery but offers to discuss it with his counselor. Adam goes to a book signing with Katie and tells her that he likes her and also that he is going to have some changes soon. Later on, the counselor informs him of how long it takes and everything he has to go through before he can get any kind of surgery or hormones. But for now she gives him a compression vest to hide his breasts. Adam also lets it slip that he might be doing this for Katie. Adam is upset later to find out from Katie herself that she does not like Adam that way. Later, Dave watches as Adam goes online and joins communities to talk with more FTM guys that are going through what he is going through.

Imogen is thrilled to land the part of "Clara' in the play. She is upset to find out that Eli does not consider them a couple, as he is not ready to date again. Imogen later thanks Clare for her help by giving her free dinner for two at Little Miss Steaks. Imogen's plan is put in motion when she invites Eli to the restaurant and causes them to run into Jake and Clare. Clare is angry when she realizes what Imogen has done and an emotional Eli storms out of the restaurant. The next day Eli apologizes to Imogen. But he also disappoints her when he tells her that he is not over Clare. Jake is now building sets for the play, in order for Eli to keep his friends close and enemies closer.

This episode could have gone either way but it really picked up in the second half. Holly J's story was told honestly and we really saw the emotions she went through with everything from possibly missing out on Yale, to learning who her birth mother really is. Adam's story turned out to be more about his struggles than his relationship with Katie. Eli and Clare's drama took a back seat in the C-plot where it fit perfectly with everything. This episode overall gets a B+.
