Degrassi: Mr. Brightside (Part 1)

"It's just guy stuff"

Tonight Degrassi kicked off it's fourth week of Now or Never with an episode titled after a song by The Killers. They keep things fresh with a UFC inspired storyline and couple of strong subplots.

Drew has been practicing his underground mixed martial arts with Julian and Owen, and he has gotten pretty good. The boys are fighting secretly in the workout room. This situation has caught the attention of Katie who has been flirting with Drew. The boys warn Drew that they are risking getting suspended due to the school's zero tolerance of fights. They also notice a lot of anger built up in Drew. Drew shares his stories with Adam, and his brother questions if this has anything to do with Drew getting attacked. Drew later challenges the heavy set Mo to a fun fight. While Katie watches from the doorway, Drew shows off and takes down big Mo. Katie later questions him about it as she is doing a story for the paper, but promises to keep it anonymous. The two also admit their attraction to each other. Later Drew brags to his friends about taking down Mo and tells them that he trust Katie, even though they do not. They boys are surprised to see Mr. Simpson having a lock installed and requiring supervision in the weight room, after reading Katie's article. The guys blame Drew for telling Katie. Drew confronts Katie, who reminds him that she only promised to keep names out and shows no remorse for what she did. Katie has heard about Drew's past and offers to help him. Drew is offended and berates Katie for all she has done.

Alli and Dave are now officially a couple. Dave wants to hang out more, but Alli is worried about what her parents will say. Her dad happily gives her permission to go out with friends, but is clear that he thinks she is too young for relationships. At school, Dave points out that adults tend to love him and he is interested in meeting her parents. Alli apprehensive about rocking the boat now that her parents are finally warming up to her again. Clare suggest that she introduce Dave as a friend initially to keep things simple. Alli spends the afternoon prepping Dave to impress her parents. Dave is surprised to find out that he is not allowed to call her his girlfriend in front of her parents. Alli introduces "David" to her parents. Dave spends the afternoon lying about his interests and tastes to impress Alli's parents, which works. But finally Dave is tired of lying and leaves.

Holly J is picking out dresses for prom with Fiona. She is still troubled over her biological mother Dawn requesting $20,000 to give her a kidney. Fiona informs her that she already has a check getting written up to pay for it, and won't take no for an answer. Holly J eventually accepts Fiona's offer. Shortly after Fiona gets a call from her lawyer saying that it's not going to happen, as it is illegal to buy a kidney. Holly J confronts Dawn and begs her to give her the kidney. Dawn says she can't afford to take 3 months off of work to recover. Holly J angrily berates Dawn for this and calls her selfish as she storms out. During dialysis, Holly J is feeling tired of fighting for her life. But Fiona tells her that they won't give up.

This episode has a great build up so far, and a fresh new story that we haven't seen yet. This reminds us that Degrassi will always find new stories to tell. Tomorrow we will post the grade along with the recap of part two.
