Degrassi: Mr. Brightside (Part 2)

"What do you have a death wish or something?"

Tonight Degrassi concluded the episode titled after a song by The Killers. The stories are truly flowing together nicely this season and the continuity deserves praise.

Adam is awoken in the night by Drew working out on a punching bag downstairs. He complains about the weight room being guarded thanks to Katie. Adam tells Drew that if Katie likes him then he should go for it. Drew later brings Katie and apologetic coffee, which leads to her apologizing for the article. Drew then offers to join the paper as the sports writer. Katie offers him a tryout and invites him to meet with everyone after school. The guys are still angry at Drew for helping Katie with her article, but he apologizes and they tell him about another where the fights are held. Drew tells them he can't make it due to joining the school paper. At the meeting Drew falls asleep and has flashbacks to getting jumped. When he awakens he rushes out and meets the guys at the fights. He immediately joins in and gets caught up in a fight that leaves him passed out on the ground. Owen and Julian rush inside the cage to check on him. The next day Julian sees Drew working out and advises him to focus on Katie and the newspaper before he gets himself killed. Katie later questions him off the record, and he confesses about his fears and nightmares since he was jumped. Katie offers to find other ways to help him outside of the fights. The two share a kiss but Drew pulls away, as he is afraid of screwing things up for her as well. Drew later goes back to the fights for a rematch. A much more intense Drew knocks the guy out, but continues beating on him after he taps out. Katie and Julian run in to pull him off before he kills the guy. Katie assures everyone that Drew is not coming back there again, and takes him home. The next day he meets Katie in the gym so she can teach him taekwondo. The two flirt a bit before Katie flips Drew over on his back. Drew once again declares his like for Katie.

Alli tells Dave that she just wanted her parents to like him when he visited. But Dave thinks that since she wants to be honest then she should expect the same from him as well. Alli then invites him back over to her house, this time as Dave. She then goes home and confesses to her parents that Dave is actually her boyfriend. They still think she is too young, but figure it was bound to happen. They allow her to invite Dave over. Alli reintroduces Dave to her parents as himself, and they have a fun conversation which leads to a game of poker. Alli wins the game and the night ends with everyone on good terms. Alli and Dave are happy and plan to have the whole summer together. The next day at school Alli is telling Clare everything when her science teacher informs her that she got into the summer program that she applied for. She now realizes she has to choose between the program and spending the summer with Dave.

A more calm Holly J meets with Dawn and apologizes for her behavior as she understands Dawn's situation. Dawn wishes she could afford to give her kidney to Holly J. The two plan to find the silver lining by getting to know each other without the kidney drama. The two enjoy a lunch of discussing prom and graduation. Later Holly J tries on Fiona's dress and Fiona gives it to her for the prom. Holly J shows her pictures of Dawn in her prom dress on the computer. Fiona loves the dress and then offers to buy the dress from Dawn... for $20,000. Holly J later presents this idea to Dawn who happily accepts it. Holly J later tells her mother but leaves out the details that Fiona is indirectly buying the kidney from her. Holly J lets her Mom and Fiona know how much she loves them.

The main plot was a great way to introduce a new issue, but it just was not as intense as one may have hoped. The subplots were great and obviously Dave and Alli's story is leading somewhere bigger. This episode gets a B. We are getting so close to the summer finale.
